Kuwait has the world’s fifth largest oil reserves and is one of the richest countries in the world. With a per capita income of US $60,800 and a GDP of $295 billion according to Proleads, the Arab state is one of the fastest growing economies in the region. According to the 2008 Index of Economic Freedom, Kuwait also has the second-most free economy in the Middle East making it one of the best places in the region to conduct business.
The increase in oil prices since 2003 resulted in a surge in Kuwait’s economy and a booming construction sector. Kuwait’s oil production is expected to reach 4 million bpd by 2020 and in order to meet this target, Kuwait Petroleum Corporation plans to invest $51 billion by 2012 to upgrade and expand the country’s existing refineries.

Schedule: Last July, the Kuwaiti Government approved the project and it is now in the design stage. CivicArts/Eric R Kuhne and Associates is the urban and landscape designer. The city needs more than 10 years to be completed. Construction of the first phase is scheduled to begin in 2012 and will take about five to seven years to be completed.
Scope: Madinat Al Hareer, which if translated into English means City of Silk, is located in Subiya, Kuwait City. The mixed-use development will cover an area of 250km². The city will be divided into four main districts: Educational City, Finance City, Leisure City and Ecological City. The development will include an Olympic stadium, residences, hotels and retail facilities. Around 450,000 new jobs will be created, and around 700,000 residents will be housed in the city.
