Located in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia, Jubail was designated as a new industrial city in 1975 and since then the Saudi Arabian Bechtel Company (Sabco) has been overseeing the construction of the giant project.
The city, cited in 1983’s Guinness Book of Records as the largest engineering and construction project ever attempted, is complete with various business sectors, housing, retail outlets and educational and medical facilities to support its population of almost 100,000 people.
Currently, the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu and Sabco is overseeing a huge expansion of the city, which includes new residential areas, a university, a rail network and a new industrial zone dubbed Jubail Two.

This zone will cover an area of 84km² and is located 8km west of the original industrial zone of Jubail One. Industries destined for operation there will be centred around petrochemicals including a US $8 billion (SAR 30 billion) refinery to be operated by Satorp – a joint venture between Saudi Aramco and France’s Total.

Jubail Projects
Saudi Basic Industries (Sabic) and the Saudi International Petrochemical Company (Sipchem) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for setting up new projects in Jubail.
The two companies have announced that they will carry out projects allocated by the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources.
The projects include seven plants with an estimated investment of US $3.2 billion (SAR12 billion), which Sabic will construct to produce hundreds of thousands of tonnes of petrochemicals.
Sipchem will also build two plants for an estimated cost of $810 million.
These plants are expected to be completed by the middle of 2013.
The two companies will move forward on these projects after the completion of economic studies and legal procedures.
Sabic vice president for corporate finance Mutlaq Al Morished and Sichem CEO Ahmad Al Ohali signed the MoU.
