Gary Phetteplace
The first draft of the ASHRAE design manual for district cooling systems is expected for review by mid-October 2009, revealed Gary Phetteplace at a recent ASHRAE Falcon Chapter technical seminar.
He praised the Falcon Chapter of ASHRAE, representing the Middle East, for initiating the idea of the design manual and providing the necessary impetus for it to be realised.
Phetteplace explained that the idea for such a design manual was first touted in February 1997 as ASHRAE Research Project 1267-RP. “This date marked the compilation of the original work statement. However, the project languished after this. It was ultimately not approved, and did not attract the necessary funding.”
In autumn 2006, the ASHRAE Falcon Chapter expressed a keen interest in such a design manual, which had the effect of reviving the moribund project. The work statement was updated and the project given the green light, with funding finally approved in November 2008.

In terms of the ASHRAE Falcon Chapter having actual input into the compilation of the design manual, Phetteplace said that feedback and input would be solicited via president Yousef Alshaer once a complete outline had been supplied. The design manual will include the following sections:
• Introduction/Overview
• System Planning & Design
• Design Criteria
• System Architecture
• End-User Interface
• Central Plant
• Thermal Storage
• Distribution Systems
• Instrumentation & Control
• Operation & Maintenance
• Advanced Topics
• Case Studies
• References/Appendices
Phetteplace is a private consultant in various fields, including district heating and cooling, in which he has 33 years’ experience. He has developed several models for optimal design of district heating and cooling systems, and has conducted a number of field studies that have instrumented and measured the performance of both existing and new distribution systems.
He has been the long-standing editor and handbook committee chairman for ASHRAE Technical Committee TC6.2, District Heating and ASHRAE Falcon Chapter Cooling. In that capacity he has contributed all the thermal and hydraulic analysis sections, as well as other portions for many past editions, as well as the current 2008 edition of the ASHRAE Handbook, HVAC Systems and Equipment Volume, Chapter 11.
FEATURED COMMENT
I would like to review the district cooling design-manual draft.
