India and Bahrain have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which will help streamline the employment of Indian workers in Bahrain and protect them from exploitation.
The MoU on Labour and Manpower Development was signed in Bahrain by the minister of overseas Indian affairs Shri Vayalar Ravi and Bahrain’s minister of labour Dr Majeed Al Alawi, said a statement from the Indian government.
It’s understood that the agreement will help boost the number of skilled Indian workers in Bahrain and make it tougher for recruiting agents to deceive and exploit workers.
Under the agreement employers who want to recruit Indian workers will have to clearly specify the nature of the work they will be doing and the required professional skills.
Employers will also have to specify the duration of the contract, an agreed salary, end-of-contract benefits, health services, holidays, transportation, housing and other details.
A joint committee will be formed to implement the agreement and as well as review employment opportunities and availability of corresponding skills in both countries.
Indian workers make up a bulk of Bahrain’s expatriate population with around 150,000 workers in total. Last year around 31,900 Indian workers entered the Kingdom.
Bahrain is the fifth country in the Gulf to sign a labour and manpower co-operation agreement with India after the UAE, Oman, Kuwait and Qatar.
