Saudi Aramco believes solar power has a lot to offer the Kingdom's expanding energy sector.
Saudi Aramco has inked a deal with Japan’s Showa Shell to explore solar power generation prospects in the Kingdom.
The pilot project will involve Showa Shell - in which the oil supermajor also holds an equity stake via an affiliate - sharing its technology and expertise with Saudi Aramco.
As part of the project, young Saudi engineers will receive specialised training in Showa Shell’s solar energy plant. A team drawn from both firms has already started designating training programmes and developing project execution plans.
“We’re pleased to embark on this pilot project with our friends at Showa Shell and to explore the contributions that innovative solar power technology can provide to Saudi Arabia’s expanding energy sector,” said Khalid Al-Buainain, senior vice president for refining, marketing and international, Saudi Aramco.
"There are promising opportunities to reduce power generation and transmission costs, particularly in the Kingdom’s rural areas and for remote industrial facilities and installations,” Al Buainain added.
