Iraq has set aside US $446 million for a sports city in Basra to host the 2012 Gulf Cup, a government spokesman indicated over the weekend.
"The council of ministers, on the recommendation of the minister for youth and Sports freed up 446 million dollars to build a 146 hectare modern complex inspired by the architectural style of Basra," said Ali Al Dabbagh, according to the Agence France-Presse (AFP) news agency.
Plans for the complex included a 65,000-capacity stadium, a 10,000-seat arena and four smaller 400-seat training stadiums.
Iraq’s youth and sports ministry spokesman Assifa Moussa added that a sporting village would also be built by an unnamed Iraqi firm working in association with two US companies.
Moussa said that the village would consist of eight buildings, each housing 16 apartments.
