Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Crossing (6th crossing)
1- Subiya Causeway
Location: Kuwait
Value: US $3.7 billion
Client: Ministry of Public Works
Schedule: The project is under design. Tender documents for the main construction contract are expected to be issued later this year. Construction was scheduled to begin in 2010 and will take four years to build.
Scope: The project calls for the construction of a 37km causeway across the Bay of Kuwait connecting Shuwaikh Port with Subiya New Town Development. The project also includes a 27km low-level bridge across the bay, a main bridge with a span of 200m, elevated road, and a 5km approach road onshore in Subiya.
2- Bahrain-Qatar Causeway
Location: Bahrain/Qatar
Value: US $3 billion
Client: Public Works Authority (Qatar), Ministry of Works (Bahrain)
Schedule: Cowi Consult was awarded a pre-studies contract. In November 2008, KBR had been awarded a contract to provide design management, project management and construction management services. A joint venture of Vinci Construction, Middle East Dredging Company - Medco, Hochtief Construction, Consolidated Contractors Company and QDVC was awarded the main construction contract in May 2008. Construction is expected to begin early next year and completed in early 2014. Middle East Dredging Company - Medco will carry out the dredging works.
Scope: The Qatar - Bahrain causeway project calls for the design and construction of a 40km two-lane dual carriageway between Qatar and Bahrain. The road will run over 18km of embankments where the sea is shallow and 22km of viaducts and bridges over deep water, including two 400m cable-stayed bridges over shipping channels. QDVC is a Qatari subsidiary owned 51% by Qatari Diar and 49% by Vinci Construction Grand Projects.
3- Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Crossing (6th crossing)
Location: Dubai, UAE
Value: US $3 billion
Client: Roads and Transport Authority
Schedule: FXFowle International’s architectural design was selected by the RTA. The project that was announced in February 2008, with a scheduled completion date of 2012, is still to be awarded.
Scope: The bridge is planned to be the longest arch bridge in the world.
The project, which is also the biggest ever, single road project, will also include new road developments with 12km new roads and 22 intersections in the surrounding areas.
The bridge is 1.7km long, 64m wide and 15m above the water level. It will have 12 lanes and a rail track for the Dubai Metro’s Green Line.
It will have a capacity of around 20,000 vehicles per hour. The crossing will link Al Jaddaf and Business Bay at Bur Dubai with the road separating The Lagoons and Dubai Festival City. The giant arch at the bridge will be 205m high
and 667m long making it the longest arch-bridge in the world.

4- Al Mafraq Bridge
Location: Abu Dhabi, UAE
Value: US $204 million
Client: Abu Dhabi Municipality & Town Planning Department
Schedule: Al Jaber Engineering & Contracting was awarded the main construction in early 2008. Construction started in March 2008. Project duration is 24 months.
Scope: The project calls for construction of the 8 lane Al Mafraq Bridge, which will be 26m wide and 380m long.
5- Business Bay Canal Extension - Phase 1 (Sheikh Zayed bridge)
Location: Dubai, UAE
Value: US $200 million
Client: Roads & Transport Authority (RTA)
Schedule: Sungwon Company was awarded the main construction contract in November 2008. Construction is in progress and expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2010.
Scope: The project calls for the extension of business bay canal. Phase 1 of the project includes elevating of Sheikh Zayed Road above the canal to form a bridge. The length of the affected sector of Sheikh Zayed Road is 800m.
6- Bridge Works
Location: Oman
Value: US $52 million
Client: Muscat Municipality
Schedule: Fedrichi Sterling Batco was awarded the main construction contract in December 2008. Construction is expected to be in January 2009 and completed in 2011.
Scope: The project calls for construction of three bridges in different areas of Oman. The bridges will each be 150m long and 16m wide and will be located over Al Nahda Street, Al Walaj Street and Wasel Street. The scope of work also includes the construction of 10 manhole boxes along Sultan Qaboos Street in Al Qurum area.
7- Hudayriat Bridge
Location: Abu Dhabi, UAE
Value: US $50 million
Client: Tourism Development & Investment Company (TDIC)
Schedule: Bids for the main contract have been submitted. Al Naboodah Contracting, Six Construct Abu Dhabi and some international contracting companies have already been pre-qualified.
Zueblin International won the Enabling Works contract while Parsons International was appointed as consultant.
Scope: The project calls for the construction of Hudayriat Bridge in Abu Dhabi. The bridge will connect Abu Dhabi with Hudayriat Island.
