The Gulf has more supertall towers than any other place in the world

MEA & CTBUH bring you the Gulf’s 28 tallest completed buildings and 12 more to come
There is a massive debate raging through the industry at the moment. Given the economic climate, some are saying that the age of the tall building has past. They’re saying that all those tall towers—Nakheel Tower, Burj Mubarak al-Kabir and Mile-High Tower, to name a few—that have been designed, modelled and marketed in every country in the region will be scrapped and replaced by low-rise, responsible, contextual and economically feasible architecture. Meanwhile, the other side of the debate screams “sustainability in density!” and cites Manhattan, Tokyo and Hong Kong as some of the most sustainable places on the planet.
In an effort to spur on the debate—and in support of the CTBUH’s 3rd Annual Marcus Evans Conference on Tall Buildings in Shanghai—Middle East Architect has compiled a list of the 28 tallest completed buildings in the region and a brief rundown of the consultants that made them happen. We also look at the region’s Top 12 tallest unfinished buildings to give an idea of what the future holds for the world’s supertall playground.
