A new line of coatings have been introduced as a result of the economic slowdown to protect abandoned and exposed steel rebar from corrosion.
The launch of the product range comes at a time when a large number projects in the region are on-hold or progressing at reduced pace, leaving rebar open to the elements.
“To offer corrosion solutions we always have to look for corrosion problems,” United Corrosion Technologies (UCT) managing director Usama Jacir told Construction Week.
“Steel is not going to wait for money to be put back into a project. So we researched this issue and came up with solutions that would economically protect the steel left on site until the day comes when the project starts up again.”
The Middle East is one of the most corrosive environments in the world due to its high levels of salt in the sea and the ground. High temperatures and humidity also cause steel to corrode if it is unprotected.
UCT’s new products are manufactured by Cortec Corporation and are available in many forms, allowing the prevention of flash rusting and providing protection of exposed rebar for up to five years.
The product range includes waterborne preservative, plastic film, emitters and water-based rust converters. Each product incorporates Migrating Corrosion Inhibitor technology.
“The inhibitors migrate towards the steel and inhibit corrosion until chlorides are built up to a very high concentration’” added Jacir.
“If these products are not used and the project is resumed then developers will have issues with their steel.”
UCT is centred on solving corrosion problems in the Middle East and its services have been utilised in projects such as the Burj Dubai, the world’s tallest structure.
