Specialised MEP design and engineering is being showcased by Drake & Scull International PJSC (DSI) at the Infinity Tower in Dubai Marina.

Project manager Yasin Sara told MEP Middle East that the unique structural design of the project required specialised MEP design and engineering. This included “the early selection of major equipment, such as chillers, to be installed in the lower floors before the structure is closed.”

The twisted or helical profile of Infinity Tower, designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, “required very extensive engineering studies and analysis, and a high level of co-ordination for the MEP works in the rotating slabs.”

The electrical load calculation was achieved during the equipment technical review and selection stage. The DSI engineering team proposed an alternative selection of mechanical equipment with reduced power consumption. It also proposed an alternative, energy-efficient lighting system.

“The cooling was in the form of a fixed solution from the designer. The DSI engineering team played a major role in providing solutions that could be integrated into the building management system,” explained Sara.

Operations manager Nizar Baraka commented that the project utilised “all DSI’s inhouse engineering expertise and available resources to overcome and achieve the project’s objectives.” The company has a notable track record in such executing ‘exceptional’ engineering challenges, he notes.

DSI’s scope of work includes managing the supply, installation, testing and commissioning of complete MEP works, including air-conditioning, ventilation, plumbing and drainage, building management system, automatic firefighting, power and lighting, telephone and data, fire alarm system, intercom system, central emergency lighting, CCTV and access control security systems, and lighting control system. The completion date for the AED141 million (US$38 million) contract is the second quarter of 2011.
