Five Bahrain construction companies could be prosecuted after five workers in 24 days were killed in worksite accidents that could have been prevented if correct health and safety procedures had been followed.

An investigation by the Labour Ministry has submitted its findings to the Public Prosecution, which will take a final decision on whether any charges will be brought against the companies in question, the Gulf Daily News reported.

In the meantime, the firms, which have yet to be named, have been ordered to improve health and safety measures or risk being shut down, a senior official told the paper.

"All reports have already been forwarded to the Public Prosecution," said Abbas Matooq, head of occupational health and safety for the Labour Ministry.

"All these companies neglected labour rules and regulations that led to the fatal accidents which took the lives of innocent workers.

"If these companies repeatedly violate the law, we can prohibit them from continuing work until they follow the proper procedures. It could also take several months for them to get permission and restart work."

Safety on Site
Whilst I do not know the circumstances of the deaths, it was interesting noting that at a safety seminar of working at heights that the Municipality hosted last year that many people made reference to inspections by authorities and how much cost safety systems would add to the project. The disturbing point is that it should not add anything to the tender in that the laws should be being complied with now and are clearly being flouted on many sites. Whilst the seminar had good intentions, it felt more of a sales conference with many speakers from companies providing fall protection, whereas it could have been more effective in covering the laws surrounding scaffolding and the like. It was also noticeable that a number of those attending where asleep or chatting to colleagues, which is just another demonstration of the importance of safety in the eyes of many. Unfortunately, there is a long way to go in improving safety on sites and more deaths will occur until a number of steps are taken, with harsher penalties just being one.

Companies facing legal action for site deaths due to lack of safety
Defenitely a good move to take stringent legal action including prosecution and shut down, so that at least other companies will take sufficinet precaution and safeguard the lives of poor and innocent workers from other Asian countries

Naming the companies
Marcus - thanks for your feedback on this story. We're unable to name the companies involved as the Bahrain Labour Ministry has yet to release this information. Rest assured though, once we know more, we'll be following up on this story and will keep you fully informed. James Boley, Online Editor, Construction Week
