A 50m canal will separate the largest island of the marine from the reclaimed golf course

Land reclamation of Bahrain’s Durrat Marina islands has been completed ahead of schedule with more than five million cubic metres of material reclaimed in 24 months.
The project was designed by Atkins and is now ready for development, said a company statement released today.
Located next to the US$6 billion (BAH 2.3 billion) Durrat Al Bahrain residential project off the south coast of Bahrain, Durrat Marina consists of three islands covering 480,000m2 and will include a 400-berth marina, retail, residential and public spaces.

“This element of works was the first significant package of construction works to be mobilised on the Durrat al Bahrain Project. The islands and mainland reclamation works were actually completed 14 months ahead of the client’s programme for the reclamation works,” said Atkins project manager Lee Glover.
Atkins said work on the marine reclamation and shore protection of the three curved islands necessitated complex engineering as the design looked to maximise sea frontages by incorporating canals and beaches.
Reclamation was carried out by a joint venture from Great Lakes and Nass Construction. The works on the Marina are scheduled to be completed by the end of August 2009 while the final area of dredging and reclamation to be completed will be the golf course, which is on target for completion by the end of 2009.
“The Marina and golf course reclamation works have been accelerated in order to hand over these two areas early and are well on track to achieve the clients advanced hand over programme,” said Glover. “We have delivered a substantial element of the project ahead of programme and within budget, this therefore creates an extremely good impression for future design works on the project.”
