An expert has warned that Qatar needs to stop building glass buildings, according to a local newspaper.

The large number of glass buildings in Qatar absorb heat and spread it to their surroundings, said coastal and environmental geomorphologist Andrea Richmond in Gulf Times.

“Buildings here are highly insulated and so it takes much more energy to cool them down, meaning air conditioners have to work harder and longer, producing more carbon dioxide,” she said.

Richmond said that developers misunderstood green requirements, with the average investor believing a ‘green’ building will cost 30-40% more. She suggested the real increase was nearer 2-5%.

Last February, a UN report accused Qatar of being the worst carbon polluter in the world, emitting more than twice as many tonnes of carbon per capita as the United States.

Glass Buildings in Qatar
one of the ways they can help to reduce their carbon footprint is by using an environmentally friendly self-cleaning glass solution that lasts up to 4 years and can save up to 50% on their window cleaning budget over the 4 year period.

Glass buildings not suitable for Qatar
No need to consult numbers from USA on green buildings. Refer to TECOM's Sustainable Development Report (download from www.enpark.ae) for factual data on case studies from Dubai.

While the "expert" may have a point, geomorphology is the study of the way landscapes are formed, not thermodynamics in buildings. Being an "expert" only relates to the field of your expertise

"Glas buildings" in Qatar
The development is on its way and has only to be in consideration of the local climate. More glas in an office building to be more in contact with the landscape is possible also in Qatar. Use external sun shading devices like external venitian blinds connected to the BMS to solve this challenge or double skin fassades for high raiser. It works ! Thierry
