Middle East construction firm Al Habtoor Leighton has won a $244 million contract to build new water stations in Qatar while chasing other projects in the Gulf state worth $3 billion.

Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation awarded the contract for the infrastructure, to be constructed immediately, to the Australian group.

The contract is for six concrete reservoirs, a pump house and related work, including a 15.9km water distribution pipeline, The Australian newspaper reported.

Al Habtoor Leighton's managing director David Savage told the paper that Qatar was now the second largest market for the group in the Middle East, after Abu Dhabi.

He said the group was tendering for several projects, with a collective value of about $3bn - the largest of which would be for the expansion of the port of Doha.

Leighton first went into Qatar in 2006 when it won the contract for the $500m Al Shaqab Equestrian Academy, which is close to completion.

Al Habtoor had five hotel developments and other office projects in Qatar before it formed a joint venture with Leighton in 2007. Savage estimated the current book of work in Qatar to be worth about $1bn.
