The Dubai Metro is to open tonight at 9pm, after four years of planning and construction.

10 stations on the Red Line are scheduled for opening today, with a further 19 expected to be operational by February next year. VIPs and special guests will be able to ride the Metro tonight, while the system opens to public at 6am tomorrow.

Transport chiefs say the new rail system will help to curtail burgeoning road traffic demands, particularly during rush hours, and will contribute to a target of 30 percent public transport use.

The Dubai Metro has been constructed for Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) by the Dubai Rapid Link Consortium (DURL). DURL comprises of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Mitsubishi Corporation, Obayashi Corporation, Kajima Corporation and Turkish firm Yapi Merkezi.
