Dubai-based URUK Engineering, which is owned by Iraqi nationals, has been awarded a US $85 million contract to build a 160MW power plant north of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.
The deal, which was awarded by Iraq’s Electricity Ministry, will provide electricity for 80,000 homes. URUK will complete the plant in about 15 months’ time.
"The government stipulated that each home would receive two kilowatts, which means the power plant that we will build will provide electricity for around 80,000 homes," Khaled Jamil, a proposal manager at URUK, told AFP by telephone.
Iraq has recommended that Canada’s SNC-Lavalin should be awarded an $86 million contract to build another power plant at Hilla. Another tender has also been launched to build a similar station at Karbala.
