“Lighting can make or break a project,” said Tino Kwan, principal consultant at the Hong Kong-headquartered Tino Kwan Lighting. “You can spend a lot of money on furnishings and materials and so on, but if the lighting isn’t done properly, none of that will really show.”

The importance of lighting to an overall interior design scheme is seldom questioned. There is now solid recognition that lighting can transform a space, creating contrast and emphasis, while significantly contributing to the overall ambiance. “Lighting design is very simple,” Kwan maintained. “Lots of people make the mistake of over lighting – putting light where it shouldn’t be. But you can ruin a space by putting in too many lights,” he warned.

“Lighting should be used to enhance a space. I like to play with light and shadows. A lot of people are afraid of shadows but if there are no shadows, the space is flat. It is not about creating a lighting show. The lighting must become part of the interior or architecture. We don’t want people to say the lighting looks good, we want them to say ‘Wow, the design looks good’.”

Aesthetic considerations also need to be complemented by energy-saving and effective control mechanisms.
