At last week's ninth community lecture for the 2009 programme from Emirates Environmental Group (EEG), WSP Environment and Energy Middle East consultant Charles Faulkner called for an end to the use of asbestos containing materials (ACMs) in the UAE.

Statistics reveal that, in 2007 alone, the country imported more than 17,000 tonnes of ACMs, which are responsible for almost 100,000 deaths per year through asbestosis and mesothelioma, a fatal form of cancer.

“With continuous use of ACMs on a large scale in the construction sector, it is expected to increase the number of illnesses related to asbestos. As such, new policies should be set in place to enforce the ban on all kinds of ACMs, while safer alternative materials must be identified to encourage construction firms and companies dealing with this substance to refrain from using ACMs,” said Faulkner.

EEG chairperson Habiba Al Maraashi added: "Many people still do not realise the tangible threats posed by asbestos to their health and the welfare of the entire society. The lecture was a significant step in our efforts to draw the public's attention towards the risks related to asbestos exposure and to create awareness about the efforts being undertaken to reduce the negative impact of ACMs."

Asbestos - ACM's
Unlike asbestosis which is caused over prolonged exposure to asbestos, mesothelioma can be caused by contact with a single spore. It can also lay dormant in the lungs for over 40 years, there are currently many legal cases being fought in the UK by people who had, or whose family member had exposure to asbestos many years ago. My father was one such case, he worked in the shipyards in Liverpool Docks in the 1950s. Feb 2002 he was feeling unwell and went to the doctors who consequently sent him the hospital for tests. Two weeks later he was diagnosed with mesothelioma, he died April 11th that year. The post mortem and subsequent tests confirmed he had died of this and it was caused by single spores that had lain dormant in his lungs for over 40 years... My father went from a healthy, active and proud man to, a helpless, racked with pain, shadow of his former self in a matter of weeks. My mother, sisters and myself spent his last week at his hospital bedside watching him die, this is not something I will ever forget nor is it something I would wish on anyone. In the 1950s companies 'claim' they did not know of the dangers of asbestos, this has since been proven as lies, hence the many ongoing legal cases with the vast amounts of compensation payments and the many more that are expected over years to come. Today there can be no excuses as we are all aware of the dangers, it is really down to ones morals and integrity that a company or a company CEO would allow such materials to be used. Food for thought, mesothelioma can be caused by a single spore, what are the materials in your house, your office or work place? When you walk past a construction site how is asbestos being handled? There are very strict handling procedures in the UK for asbestos, for very, very good reason Kevin Dubai

Asbestos
Its very good idea to banned on the asbestos as it was one of the danger for the construction site workers who were not aware that how to use asbestos. Muhammad Naeem Khan

It's requires a expert????
I can't believe the headline reads " experts calls for asbestos ban"! It doesn't need a fn' expert to know asbestos is lethal! Damn, we truly live in a turban jungle!

ACM not illegal???
Wow! I was unaware that ACM was still legal in the UAE? It has been banned in Europe since the 80's! Back then there was huge cost implications, as EVERYTHING containing aspestos was replaced - everywhere! Is UAE still categorized as an under develloped country??
