The bridge links Abu Dhabi to Saadiyat Island
The bridge linking Saadiyat Island with Abu Dhabi corniche was officially inaugurated on Wednesday as Sheikh Khalifa Bridge.
In a ceremony at the bridge’s connection with the corniche, HH General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al Nayan, crown prince of Abu Dhabi, unveiled the 1.4km long bridge, which connects with a 10 lane highway that stretches from Port Zayed to Shahama district.
“This new highway will link Abu Dhabi and the other emirates with Saadiyat Island, our new cultural oasis, and with Yas Island, our world-class leisure destination,” said Aldar chairman Ahmed Ali Al Sayegh. “Projects such as this, that address both the immediate and future needs of the people, stand a better chance of being recognised as a valuable contribution to the nation building process.”

The bridge was completed according to schedule, after construction began in December 2006. The bridge used approximately 15,000 tonnes of asphalt, 15,500 tonnes of reinforced steel and took 7.5 mllion man hours by contractor Zueblin – Saif Bin Darwish to complete.
Meanwhile most of the expressway was constructed by Aldar, with Al Jaber acting as highway subcontractor, while Six Construct built the main Dubai-Abu Dhabi interchange on Yas Island. Bridges from Yas to Saadiyat were built by Taisei Corporation.
