The Indian Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers’ Association (IEEMA), which plays a critical role in the power transmission and distribution sector on the Indian sub-continent, has embarked on a marketing drive in the UAE and elsewhere.

IEEMA president Murali Venkatraman explains that the association is hoping to tap into the power transmission and distribution expertise in the UAE by offering a convenient entry point into the selfsame sector on the Indian subcontinent. This sector is undergoing similarly rapid growth as the UAE, and offers huge scope for suppliers, manufacturers and service providers.

“Robust economic growth in developing countries such as China and India, combined with rapid urbanisation and growth in fixed investment spending, especially in infrastructure such as roads and electricity generation, will aid in boosting equipment demand. This is unlike the relatively mature North American and West European markets. India, with her sizeable population and large rural market, has an incessant appetite for electricity,” comments IEEMA president Murali Venkatraman.

IEEMA members represent the entire spectrum of manufacturing and project engineering and execution, as well as the supply chain from components to intermediate assembly. It has over 650 members in the electrical, professional electronics and allied equipment sector, with a combined turnover of US$22 billion. IEEMA represents 90% of all Indian production of electrical equipment, such as transmission lines, transformers, switchgear and related sub-station equipment such as conductors, cables and energy meters.

IEEMA’s main functions are:
• Providing a single point of contact between suppliers and EPC contractors;
• Developing appropriate technical standards; and
• Standardising components to maximise economies of scale.

“The streamlining and speeding up of electricity generation projects, from concept to commissioning, has to be improved considerably. Such projects are affected by fundamental and complex issues such as availability of land, environmental clearances and financial closure, linked to power-purchase agreements,” comments Venkatraman.

IEEMA also networks with its overseas counterpart associations in terms of information exchange, assisting members and other joint programmes aimed at enhancing business co-operation opportunities. MOUs have been concluded with Korea, China, Spain, Taiwan and Malaysia. IEEMA is also a founder of the Federation of Asian Electrical Manufacturers Associations (FAEMA).

In addition, IEEMA launched its Power Awards in 2008 to recognise excellence in capacity addition, transmission and distribution, as well as execution of large-scale projects, leadership, innovation and skills development and overall contribution to society. The first awards ceremony was held in Delhi in 2009, with the next planned for 2010. Another crucial IEEMA initiative is ELECRAMA 2010, which will showcase the latest trends and developments and trends in the sector.
