Extensive glass facades on buildings are 'inappropriate' for the desert

A sustainability expert has said the region should aim for alternatives to buildings with extensive glass facades.

Speaking at the Construction Week Building Sustainability into the Middle East conference, Abu Dhabi Department of Municipal Affairs’ consultant on environmental and sustainability planning Matthew Plumbridge said that constructing “glass buildings in the desert is inappropriate.”

“Creating buildings with vast amounts of glass is irresponsible and doesn’t reflect the local culture,” said Plumbridge. “We shouldn’t look to copying ‘Western’ models of success.”

Plumbridge outlined the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), which says that a building facade should not be more than 30% glazing.

He pointed out that this was in keeping with traditional forms of architecture for the region. Plumbridge also said that a localised version of the building code would be introduced in January 2010.

Use of Glass
I guess the issue here is the extensive use of glass in a building. Another issue regarding Sustainability is using materials which are cheaper to produce, maintain and recycle. Also there is the cultural aspect of architecture: is glass part of the culture? glass is used when transparency is needed. But when you used tinted glass or glass shielded with solid patterns etc than it becomes vital to reconsider the whole use of glass and look for solutions where glass can be associated with other materials to achieved a better sustainability and integration into the existing fabric.

Use of Glass on Buildings
The sustainability, eco-friendliness and election to utilise glass on buildings (particularly Tall Buildings)cannot be generalised as "energy innefficient" With careful treatment to reflect the solar gain and good standard glass assemblies to retain the cooler air inside the building glass can outperform the solid form quite easily. The modern buildings developed or being developed are suited to growing and vibrant townships which have long since adjusted thier outlook from the "desert" to a "city" and the Architecture must be allowed to express this empathy with modern environments.

Glass Buildings
Designers consider, Architecturally, Structurally, cost & effeciency. Less considering local culture & traditions. Generally its unfair to say "irresponsible", final say is with the owner. If there are better ideas, it should be out now or better keep mouth shut.
