Workers in Bahrain have protested over a pay dispute
Thirty-eight Indian construction workers staged a protest outside the Indian Embassy in Bahrain on Saturday after allegedly not being paid for five months.
The men, who earn between US $212-238 (BHD 80-90) a month, also claimed their visas had expired, they were forced to do unpaid overtime and they were denied any leave.
An embassy spokesman said the men work for local contractor Mohammed Ali Mirza Moh’d Taher Alasfoor Company and have been encouraged to lodge a formal complaint with the Labour Ministry today.
The sponsor, Mohammed Ali Mirza Alasfoor, has also been reported to police after allegedly verbally and physically assaulting the workers when they asked for their dues or leave, he said.
The embassy has arranged for the men to be provided with shelter and food while the case is heard. The company and the sponsor were unavailable for comment.
