Members of the public in Abu Dhabi are in danger of being exposed to toxins released by the demolition of buildings.

Speaking at the Construction Week Building Sustainability into the Middle East conference on Monday, Pure Middle East CEO Yayha Al Rayyes warned that children in particular were at risk.

“There are a quite a few buildings being demolished in Abu Dhabi, but no-one is paying attention to the pollutants released by this demolition, things like asbestos, mercury, legionella and neon,” he warned, adding that he had seen demolition work taking place near parks where children would play.

Al Rayyes, who disclosed that he personally had once contracted a near-fatal illness as a result of poor building maintenance, said that MEP consultants and facilities managers should pay close attention to solving HVAC health issues.

“The problem is that we’re not looking at something that has an immediate effect. We’ll see these problems, like cancer, occurring further down the line. What kind of a generation are we going to raise here? A sickly one?” said Al Reyyes. “Exposure to these sorts of things cannot be tolerated.”

I agree with Mr Al Rayyes about what he said in the conference that many children are at particular risk because there are several buildings demolished in Abu Dhabi that have used asbestos and mercury, which impact on many children's health.

When People will start taking these issues seriously?????
Everytime I drive to Dubai I see a huge dark cloud covering Dubai when I reach Jabel Ali area, thanks to mass construction.... I fully support Mr. Yahya and I am sure people like him need the UAE Govenment full support in order to avoid high risk health issues.

demolition
degenerate demolition! after watching thousands for days breath the poisonous dust of the hilton demolition in dubai this year was hourendous a complete lack of concern for all the people breathing in this poison, only concern for a money saving idea! It costs money to demolish correctly!!

Urgent reform required...to protect our health
I too very much agree with the viewpoints raised by Mr. Rayyes...I also happen to attend the said seminar and was deeply disturbed by the lack of proper maintenance and the lack of regulation to ensure stringent measures of quality. There was a picture of a AC duct of one of the buildings in Abu Dhabi which had mushrooms, mold growing in it....thanks to the excellent growth conditions in the duct (high humidity and lack of cleaning)..We all need to think about this really hard as it is us who are breathing in this unhealthy air in our apartments and our work....and making ourselves sick...I bought myself an air purifier as some sort of measure to protect myself and my family....

Time to reflect and invent
Well done. Finally someone has raised the alarm over the hazards of the some of the older building materials (some of which are still being used) and the presence of such dangers which has been overlooked for so many years. Most cities in the region are in a rush to build more that they have forgotten how to ensure to preserve what they have and how ensure to reverse the cycle of destruction and annihilation of the culture and the heritage as well as the building products of their ancestors and how to modify or innovate these systems and products.
