Well, it is nearly time for the Grand Prix, and as the thousands of spectators watch drivers such as Hamilton, Button and the rest go ‘neeeeyowww’ past the grandstand, I wonder how many of them will consider the monumental effort that has turned this barren outcrop into a shining new city in such a short space of time.
While there is still work to do, I find it incredible that on my first visit in January last year, the development was for the most part, open desert. Over the last year, we’ve mentioned the large purchases of machinery, including cranes, compressors and site vehicles that have made it all possible, but perhaps most incredible is the size and dedication of the workforce that have raised this development from the dust. I sincerely hope they will get the chance to watch the race that they have made possible.
On the subject of the Grand Prix, HH Sheikh Hamad has thrown open the doors of his ‘garage’, aka the Emirates National Motor Museum, on the morning of the 31st. There’s plenty to keep machinery buffs amused as his collection includes Kenworth big rigs, and a number of Dodge Power Wagons from the 1950s – including one scale replica, some five times larger than the original. There’s loads of cars too, and a concourse show with an auction will precede free shuttle buses back to Yas Island. Drop me an email if you want to know more.
