Union Railways, the UAE federal agency aimed at establishing an Emirates-wide rail network, held its first official board meeting on Monday.

The meeting, led by Union Railways chairman Hussain Al Nowais, briefed the board of directors on the progress made by the Abu Dhabi Passenger and Freight Railway Committee since its inception two years ago.

“This first board meeting is an important milestone in our drive to create this historic railway and, as a team, we are honored to be at the reins of this development. Today, our highest priority is building a best-in-class logistics and passenger network with the highest-caliber team to run the business successfully,” said Al Nowais.

The board said it would approve the appointment of a ‘renowned international consultant’ to develop an operations model for the railway, as well as lay the groundwork to ensure there would be a talent pool of UAE nationals to work on the project.

“We are in talks with several local and international educational institutions to develop specialised transport engineer curriculums, in an effort to develop local talent to run Union Railway in the future,” said Al Nowais.
