Modern facilities, such as its airport, could make Dubai a strong candidate to host the UN.

A feature in a US business weekly magazine has called for the UN headquaters to be relocated from New York to Dubai.

The article, written by Joel Kotkin, a professor in ‘Urban Futures’ at Chapman University in California, makes a compelling case.

He argues that following the construction boom there is plenty of office, residential and hotel space available, saying that the government could,“…Offer to build a United Nations City to house the UN in any number of vacant office towers. Business Bay has 65 million square feet of office space under construction in more than 200 high-rises. Dubai already has thousands of newly constructed apartments that await the international delegates.”

The professor bolstered the case by adding that more than two billion people in Africa, Europe and Asia are within a six-hour flight from Dubai and that the airports in the UAE are exemplary compared with JFK, described by Kotkin as an ‘aerial dumpster’.

From a construction point of view, bringing in the UN could only be a good thing and the suggestion might not be as outlandish as it sounds. The organisation’s main building in New York is in a terrible state of disrepair, requiring millions of dollars to be spent removing asbestos and fixing leaks.

An internal committee last year recommended that the operation should relocate to Asia, preferably Singapore, on a temporary basis.

However, the author of the article points out: “[Singapore] is already crowded, expensive and highly regulated. …In contrast, the Dubai government has transformed a once vast, empty landscape into a Star Wars-like capital city of the future. There is no skyline more arresting than the one built over the past 15 years by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.”

Absolutely super!! Dubai has the right infrastructure and global ideology to support this move. MiddleEast is infact situated at the heart of the world. Near Africa and the rest of Asia and Europe, a perfect choice! Dubai is NEUTRAL, it also has a fantastic security- they were able to apprehend a gang of runaway robbers from Europe,in a matter of weeks,in par with Europeans in matters of security. The population is almost gun free, peaceful and safe, one of the least violent middleeast countries. Lets champion this move. DUBAI needs UN, wants UN,will fulfil all UN wishes!! please COME !!

Right.........maybe not
I agree that it makes perfect sense and the reasoning behind Mr. Kotkin's report is excelent, except for one litle items SECURITY, has anyone gone to the UN building/area lately? The damn place has it's one army, considering how many UN missions and offices have been bombed, hit etc.....

Move the UN to Dubai
What a Brilliant Idea... In my opinion having the UN re sited into the centre of the most populated landmass continents on earth and with simply the best airports and available buildings and housing already finished and currently empty would be the perfect centre for world unity. Just a few hours from so many highly populated and needy nations is something that simply cannot be ignored. And we must consider that no matter what the truth is about the worlds opinion of the USA, and I have no issue here, most of the world is wary that the UN is situated in a country who "appear" to some to be intruding in other peoples countries. I am not political and I detest any form of violence, but Dubai may have had its financial problems but you cannot accuse it of being aggressive or uncharitable.... Go On... lets have the UN in Dubai... its perfect.
