Intersec is a showcase for the latest industrial health and safety products.
Fire safety standards in the Middle East are now almost as high as those in Europe, according to exhibitors at this week's Intersec security and safety show.
“I was working in the industry here in 2003 and it was altogether different – very few regulations, especially regarding the fireproofing of steel,” commented Rutgers Organics export manager, Dr Herbert Weiss. German firm Rutgers provides fireproof paint solutions for wood, steel and cabling.
“In the past three to six years that’s changed a lot and there are more and more improvements all the time.
“Today, the safety and fireproofing sectors are seen as they are in Europe. With all the high-rises here in Dubai, for example, there really needs to be, but the regulators have learned a lot.”
Vimpex is a UK-based company specialising in fire safety products and alarm systems. The company has clients across the UAE and claims, like Rutgers, that standards here are approaching best practice.
“Fire safety, certainly, is taken almost as seriously and there’s definitely still a demand for high quality products,” said Vimpex’s Ken Pearce.
However, Pearce advised regional designers, developers and contractors to think of security, fire and safety as early in the design process as possible in order to incorporate the best products and systems.
“Generally, the thought for fire protection comes too late and, often, when it does come, it’s rarely done according to the initial specifications.
“Fire safety needs to be considered from the design or outline stages onwards and certainly well before a project goes out to tender.”
