Construction of Al Maktoum airport has been delayed, but opening of phase one is due in June this year.
Dubai Airports will seek approval for expansion plans likely to cost “billions of dirhams”.
Company CEO Paul Griffiths revealed the information in an interview with newswire Bloomberg on Sunday, but did not go into detail about the costings.
As well as expanding the existing Dubai International Airport, the emirate is also building the Al Maktoum Airport at the other end of the city. Construction delays on this project mean the opening of the first phase is now expected in June of this year.
Al Maktoum Airport is the GCC’s second largest active airport project, with an estimated value of US $8 billion.
If the project goes ahead as originally planned, Al Maktoum International Airport will be the largest passenger and cargo hub in the world. Capacity will be 160 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of cargo per year.
