Tourism Development & Investment Company has completed first phase renovation work on Al Bateen Wharf’s Fishermen’s Marina.
The first phase featured the completion of the marina’s mooring berths, which will accommodate 323 fishing vessels, varying in length from 10 to 18 metres. Each berth is equipped with running water, electrical power, fire fighting equipment and standard amenities.
A 192-metre long underground culvert has been built to connect the water bodies of the east and west bays to improve the circulation and quality of water in the marina.
Mubarak Hamad Al Muhairi, managing director of TDIC, said: “We are very proud of this project as it highlights Abu Dhabi’s rich seafaring history - a cherished part of our Emirati heritage.
“We want visitors and residents to experience this heritage, which will provide a natural gateway to our capital. Al Bateen Fishermen’s Marina has been developed to specifically serve the district’s resident fishermen who have historically occupied this area, as well as accommodate the needs of its community.”
A second phase of work is due for completion by the second quarter of 2012.
This will include construction of a fishermen's community club, food and beverage outlets, a luxury yacht marina, a yacht club, retail outlets, underground parking structures, a boardwalk, landscaped areas, vessel maintenance facility and a promontory coffee shop.
