The Gulf region has the highest per capita waste generation in the world. However, a new streetlamp from designer Haneum Lee could help to throw some light on the problem. Called the Gaon, the streetlamp is powered entirely by garbage.
The streetlamp features a trashcan at its base, which is intended for use by foot traffic. As pedestrians toss their garbage into the can, it is composted automatically. The methane from the compost is then used to power the streetlamp.
Still in the design phase, the futuristic-looking streetlamp – which has been compared to a giant electric toothbrush – still has several technical hurdles to overcome. These include sorting the garbage input, because what happens to non-compostable elements? Also, exactly how much garbage will it take to power the streetlamp?
The Web site Treehugger.com comments: “I for one am glad designers are out there tackling issues like this, instead of doodling futuristic cars and weapons and such. And though it would certainly be difficult to keep up – that is a lot of composting, and a lot of maintenance on those compost-powered lights – there is no reason we should not be thinking of solutions like this.”
