The AED 320 million MEP works contract for the Khalifa Port and Industrial Zone (KPIZ) in Taweelah, Abu Dhabi has been secured by Al Habtoor-Specon LLC.

This is one of the biggest active MEP projects in the region, according to Al Habtoor-Specon MD Thrasos Thrasyvoulou.

“There is one big building, about 75,000 square metres, and another 28 smaller buildings, so the whole job is about 112,000 square metres. In addition there are all the externals, such as seven 22 kV sub-stations. It is a complex project,” said Thrasyvoulou.

“We are on-site already. As recently as the beginning of March 2010 we knew there would be some revisions and delays in the construction, but we have already mobilised. The full scope will be established after the redesign by the client.”

Thrasyvoulou says this is a design-and-build contract. “We have an in-house team, in association with a professional company under the Al Habtoor-Specon umbrella, with whom we will develop the design from A-Z, which is a challenge. We have finished the preliminary design of the buildings on-time.”

The Abu Dhabi Ports Company is overseeing the project, which includes a container-handling terminal and piers for raw and bulk cargo. Khalifa Port was intended to replace Abu Dhabi’s largest existing port, Mina Zayed, by 2012.
