Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa), will award the main consultancy contract for the emirate’s first IWPP in June, according to reports.
A total of 14 bids have been received and Dewa CEO and managing director Saeed Mohammad Al Tayer told UAE daily Khaleej Times that the authority would soon begin evaluating them.
Dewa expects to issue the tender for construction of the plant in the second half of this year and to award a contract in 15 to 18 months from then.
The IWPP will be located at the Hassyan site on the border with Abu Dhabi. It comprises a 1500MW power and 120 million gallon-a-day desalination complex. Three previous tenders for the Hassyan project failed to find a bid that Dewa considered attractive.
The launch of IWPP will require the introduction of new legislation to cater for private sector participation in the power and water sectors.
