Metito to build Kabul sewage treatment plant

Desalination and wastewater treatment specialist Metito has been commissioned to design, supply, build and commission a sewage treatment plant for the local government in Kabul, Afghanistan to serve a population of 6000 people.

The plant is at the design and procurement stage. It will employ the latest in extended aeration technology, which purifies sewage by the destruction of organic compounds through the use of air.

These compounds, which are converted to gas, water and sludge form, are then removed, and what remains is clear and odour-free effluent water that can be used for various applications.

“The availability of sanitation facilities is vital to the rebuilding of Kabul,” said Metito group business development director Bassem Halabi.

“We aim to improve the situation with this project, and allow citizens access to the most basic of basics: sanitary services. Afghanistan is not an easy place to work in, but with a dedicated team and support from the local authorities, the plant is expected to be completed by 19 May 2010.”
