A total of AED850m worth of upgrade work will be completed on Emirates Road in Sharjah, transport officials have said.
Engineer Salah Butti Obaid bin Buttim, director general of Sharjah Planning and Survey Department, told the Khaleej Times that extra lanes would be built as well as pedestrian crossings.
“Further lanes, slip roads, extensions, parallel roads and pedestrian crossings are to be added to the Emirates Road starting from the boundaries of the emirates of Dubai to Ajman,” Butti told the paper.
He said that heavy trucks have been banned from using the road from 5.30am to midnight in a bid to improve traffic flow.
Butti told the paper that a study into Khalidiya Bridge is currently underway and that a new design had been approved. He added that the existing two lanes will be converted to five lanes on each side of the bridge.
