Millennium Energy Industries (MEI) is to design and install a large-scale solar hot-water system for two five-star resorts in Jordan.
Engineered specifically for the region’s desert and maritime conditions, the flagship solar project is anticipated to generate energy savings of 1,100 MHh a year. The payback period is expected to be less than four years, while the lifespan of the system is about 25 years.
The turnkey systems, at Movenpick Resort & Spa Dead Sea and Movenpick Resort Tala Bay, Aqaba, will supply both facilities with a total of 90,000 litres of hot water daily, in summer and winter, to satisfy a significant portion of the hot water consumption of over 800 rooms in both hotels.
MEI will use a specially designed and engineered flat plate collector manufactured in Europe. The systems, which will be integrated with the existing boilers for back-up when solar energy is insufficient, will cover an area of 1,000m2 in Movenpick Tala Bay, Aqaba and 700m2 in Movenpick Dead Sea.

“Solar energy will help our facilities save on operating costs by using a freely-available resource for our significant water-heating needs,” said Ahmad Jamjoum, CFO of Zara Investment in Jordan.
“Zara and its Movenpick properties went through a rigorous process to assess their options; we are excited they decided to move forward for the benefit of their clients and the environment. This system greatly reduces carbon emissions, which is particularly significant seeing that the region and the GCC in particular has the highest emissions per capita in the world,” said MEI chairman Ennis Rimawi.
