First up is the 50km undersea Channel Tunnel linking Folkestone, Kent near Dover in the United Kingdom with Coquelles, Pas-de-Calais near Calais in northern France. Tunnelling commenced in 1988, and the tunnel began operating in 1994. The total cost of the project, in 1985, was GBP4.6bn (GBP10bn adjusted to 2010 prices), with a cost overrun of 80%.
