There's no arguing that the summer months in the UAE and wider GCC are some of the most severe on the planet. With temperatures set to tickle the low 50s this July and August, just walking in that kind of heat is enough to sap anyone's energy. Labouring on construction sites at the peak of the summer heat is no easy feat.
The UAE adopted its summer work ban in 2006 to protect workers from those kinds of conditions. It's claimed that the ban has helped reduce workplace accidents caused through worker exhaustion and other heat related health problems - and it's difficult to dispute those claims given the temperature extremes workers must endure.
There are those, however, that say the work ban simply extends the day. Workers still have to complete a 12 hour shift, and the midday break just serves to draw the day out. They say that they're used to working in extreme temperatures, and the three-hour midday break effectively cuts short the time they have off between shifts.
What do you think? Should workers have a choice? Or is the midday workban a tremendous idea that saves lives, prevents accidents and safeguards the region's labour-force?

Its works & worths
Actually you cannot think that it is really waste of time. It helps us to much to get some rest at the peak time. It's hot and humid from 7:00 AM, we can't as human beings to stay any more under direct sun. It really works and saves life.

summer midday work ban
This is very good move by the Dubai government to prevent people from working in the heat. But, at the same time, there should be a strict rule on companies that they should provide rest areas with AC on site. It would save the time wasted going back and forth to the accommodations. Most companies in Dubai have accommodation far away from projects.
