ABB has delivered and installed 26 vacuum-cast coil dry-type transformers that will ensure a reliable and efficient supply of power to the two main stadiums being used for the 2010 World Cup soccer tournament in South Africa.
Twelve 1,200 kVA dry-type transformers will serve the Cape Town Stadium in Green Point, which has a retractable roof and a seating capacity of 68,000.
Fourteen similar transformers in the 500 to 1 000 kVA range have been installed in the Soccer City Stadium in Soweto, Johannesburg. This stadium, with a seating capacity of around 100,000, is the focal point of the tournament as it is the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies and key matches.

“Our dry-type transformers are designed to minimise environmental and fire hazards, and are ideal for crowded areas and public spaces like sports stadiums,” said Tarak Mehta, head of ABB’s global transformers business.
Transformers are integral components of any electrical grid, and are a critical element in the efficient and safe conversion of energy across diverse voltage systems. ABB’s transformer portfolio includes power transformers rated up to 1,000 kV, dry- and liquid-distribution transformers, as well as related services and components.
