Four workers were killed after falling six-storeys when the maintenance cradle they were working in collapsed at Sharjah’s Ansar Mall yesterday morning.

Three of the men died at the scene and the fourth succumbed to his injuries in hospital yesterday afternoon. Unconfirmed reports say that three of the victims were Indian, while the fourth was from Bangladesh.

The men were erecting an advertising banner for a new restaurant when the incident occurred at around 3.30am. A report published in The National newspaper said that it appeared the men weren’t wearing safety harnesses at the time.

A witness, working at Al Farooq Restaurant at the time, told the paper, “We heard a loud noise of people falling and then a silence. There were no cries, no calls for help.”

"Four workers were lying on the ground in silence, only one was bleeding. It was clear they were dead,” he said, adding that the police arrived moments later.

Hamid Al Mansouri, Ansar Mall general manager told the paper, “I got a call around 3.30am that there was an accident. I told my security officer to call police immediately, and by the time I arrived at the scene, police were already there.”

The cause of the accident is under investigation. Sharjah police could not be reached for comment on the investigation, or to confirm the nationality of the victims, this morning.

UAE is such a litter in terms of human rights
Whenever there is a question by anyone to the relevant authorities over the mismanagement of safety precautions, they ward off saying it happens everywhere in the world and not only in Sharjah. Sounds more like a child running away from a punishment. We can expect better from the Sharjah government in regulating construction and maintenance companies. Just because such cases involves expats, the government isn't serious enough about it. Most of the cases aren't even reported.

Make shift cradle blamed for accident
I visited the accident scene on weekend and I believe the investigation is still going on. The length of cradle is 16m and it was a make shift cradle assembled with at least six different pieces. The cradle was supported by two wire ropes of 10mm on either side and my assumption is that the bolts either broke or came out and caused this catastrophic accident that resulted in the loss of four workers. By seeing the cradle I am sure it was neither tested nor certified. I am sure mall management shall ensure all HSE systems are in place for their contractors and they must ensure risk assessment and other HSE requirements are also in place before starting maintenance works.

Govt is faliure to comply with safety
Companies only think about money. Companies that don't appoint a safety person to monitor their work systems aren't thinking about safety.

These things should have a maintenance plan. Who was in charge of that? This is horrible.

Very unfortunate
I recommend a thorough investigation by all HSE organisations in the UAE to detect the root cause of the accident and publish the results with corrective measures. That way, small contractors operating suspended cradles can eliminate such accidents and ensure the safety of their personnel.

who cares
No one cares for quality. Quality comes with standards & standards need payments. Nowadays the Government is not observing how companies are earning and paying. If checks are done everything will be controlled. The Government is not reducing their fees, and the main clients reduced their rates and the mediators and workers are suffering.

Safety 1 - Four labourers were killed.
Good example of violation of set safety standard. A number of causes will come out after the root cause investigation is released, but why was top management not concerned about occupational safety? Safety fails because of us. Don't blame after an accident; by doing this we are just escaping from facts & the problem remains the same. Try to develop a NO BLAME CULTURE. This is a universal occupational problem not only in the UAE.

Sharjah Cradle crash killed four
This is a total failure from the company management in providing/ensuring HSE for their employees. There should be third party certification and safety harnesses for all in the suspended platform. How could there be four persons inside the cradle? The investigation agency should investigate all details and punish those concerned to prevent a re-occurrence.

Safety has been a top priority for the UAE government. A thorough investigation needs to be carried out and severe action needs to be taken against those at fault. There must be some basic / fundamental mistake that has occurred. Strict action against those concerned is a must. Only employees who make meagre earnings suffer the brunt.
