Abu Dhabi hotel commended for EHS initiatives

Cristal Hotel Abu Dhabi is the first to implement its own environment, health and safety management system.

An Abu Dhabi hotel has been commended for being the first hotel in the Emirate to implement principles imposed by the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA) on health and safety.

Cristal Hotel Abu Dhabi, part of Cristal Hotels and Resorts, has devised and implemented its own environment, health and safety management system in line with the government guidelines.

Applying to all hotels and hotel apartments in the Emirate, the authority’s policy was introduced in 2006 to protect the environment and ensure effective health and safety management through key government-private sector partnerships.

With plans to become the most environmentally-friendly hotel in the region, the hotel is also leading the way on a number of additional corporate social responsibility initiatives.

Cristal Hotels and Resorts, CEO Peter Blackburn said: “Our industry is a major consumer of energy and water and one of the highest producers of waste within the service sector, so we can make a big difference by adopting better resource management strategies.”

As an active member of another ADTA initiative, the ‘Green Hotels’ program, Cristal Hotel Abu Dhabi is particularly focused on reducing energy use, water consumption and waste production, and regularly trains its staff on environmental responsibility and resource conservation.

It has also been involved in a number of recycling campaigns led by membership body the Emirates Environmental Group, and currently recycles as much as one tonne of solid waste every week.

Blackburn added: “We are committed to becoming an example of how CSR can positively impact the lives of people and provide greater fulfillment to companies that engage in it.”
