Masdar City, the carbon neutral residential project, will continue to be developed and will not be scaled back, according to the head of the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar).

Sultan al-Jaber, chief executive, told Emirates News Agency that work would continue on the AED80.8 billion project, which is to be Abu Dhabi’s flagship in the drive towards the use of renewable energy.

Masdar City has been designed to use solar power among other sources, and has built a research institute to advance the use of such power. It is one of three units of the company, which also includes Masdar Carbon, specialising in developing energy efficiency and clean fossil fuel projects, and Masdar Power.

The four-year-old project has experienced significant delays and a revised master plan for the City is said to be imminent. It was originally slated for completion in 2015, though after five years the planned 6km2 city contains only the Madar Institute of Science and Technology.

Earlier this month it was revealed that Tariq Ali, head of research, resigned after a year in the post. His departure may be followed by that of Dan Weisser, head of real-estate investments at Masdar City, and Alistair Murray, head of the program management department, Bloomberg reported, which quoted two anonymous sources.

Also this month Masdar appointed the bidding consortium of Total and Abengoa Solar as a partner to own, build and operate Shams 1, the world’s largest concentrated solar power plant.

In the press conference for the appointment, al-Jaber said: “The review we called for towards the end of 2009 is very much timely, needed and required.”

Shams 1 will directly contribute towards Abu Dhabi’s target of achieving 7% renewable energy power generation capacity by the year 2020.
