New $3bn terminal inaugurated in New Delhi

A new multi-billion-dollar airport terminal has been inaugurated at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, in time for the Commonwealth Games this October.

The new terminal was built by a consortium headed by south India-based GMR Group that included the Airports Authority of India, Germany's Fraport and Malaysian Airports Holdings – and cost an estimated $3bn.

Scheduled to open in mid-July, the state-of-the-art hub, which cost nearly $3bn was showcased at a special ceremony by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The airport, which will handle international and domestic travellers, was built in just 37 months.

The new terminal covers an area of around 4km² and 40,000 people were involved in building it. It is the largest public building constructed in India since the country's independence in 1947, according to the consortium that built it.
