The authority charged with administering the King Fahad Causeway linking Bahrain with Saudi Arabia is to spend an additional BHD2m (AED19.5m) on improving facilities for motorists.
The money is on top of the BHD2.5m (AED24.3m) already committed for the revamp of two tower restaurants on each side of the bridge – and follows an expansion plan last September which saw the number of lanes leading in to the border on both sides increased.
The fresh allocation of funds will be used to build a BHD800,000 commercial centre on the Bahrain side of the border with coffee shops, restaurants and other shops. Work has started on the centre and officials expect it to open early next year.
Health centres are also being built on both sides at a total cost of BHD700,000, while a security checkpoint on the Bahrain side of the causeway will cost an additional BHD300,000.
