The first round of official talks between civil aviation authorities in Qatar and Germany, aimed at increasing co-operation between the two countries, began yesterday.
Construction of the New Doha International Airport, a massive 22km2 project designed to cope with 50 million passengers annually, is well underway and the first phase of the development is expected to be finished next year. Phase 3, the final part of the project, is expected to be completed in 2015.
The talks are being headed by Hartmut Spickemann, the Deputy Director General of the German Civil Aviation Authority (Luftfahrt-Bundesamt) at the Federal Ministry of Transport and his Qatari counterpart, Abdul Aziz Mohamed al-Noaimi, chairman of Qatar Civil Aviation Authority, and are designed to expand on an existing MoU between the two countries.
“The co-operation between the State of Qatar and the Federal Republic of Germany is based on the basics of growing and the permanent development in all fields, as the two countries are looking to continually strengthen the relationships, especially in the field of aviation,’’ al-Noaimi told the Gulf Times.
He said that the relationship between Qatar and Germany was just one of the many bilateral relationships Qatar was looking to establish with other countries to consolidate the state's economic and political relationships.
The talks follow a visit to Qatar by German Chancellor Angela Merkel in May as a part of a four day whistlestop tour of GCC countries to shore up interest in strengthening the euro, and to help promote the Middle East peace process.
