Zamil Steel could increase its galvansing capacity by half if trial production at its new plant in Dammam started yesterday is successful.

Zamil Steel & Galvanising Division, a sector business of Zamil Industrial Investment Company, announced the start of the trial to the Saudi stock exchange yesterday.

The company is to spend SR40 million in the new plant, which will include the latest machinery and technology, including a 15.5-metre galvanising basin that measures 15.5 metres in length, 1.5 metres wide and 3.2 metres deep.

The new capacity will potentially increase production capacity from 50,000 tonnes to 75,000 tonnes per year, increasing the company’s status as a leading steel supplier in the region.

“Increased production capacity empowers our company to operate with enhanced competitiveness in global markets especially those that specialize in manufacturing and galvanizing transmissions and telecom towers,” stated Mohammed Al Shallali, General Manager of Zamil Steel T&G Division.

The new plant has been designed with particular attention to all aspects of security, safety, and consideration of environmental concerns, the company reported.

The building, process equipment and the facility site as a whole was both designed and constructed to meet or exceed compliance levels as set forth by international environmental organizations with regard to manufacturing.

Zamil Steel is the biggest pre-engineered steel building and metal manufacturer in the region. Only Saudi Basic Industries Corporation has produced more steel in Saudi Arabia this year, according to the latest survey by Argaam, the Gulf-based financial data service, although Zamil Steel’s current total capacity is far behind rivals in Qatar and Egypt.

Steel is one of the key products of Zamil Industrial Investment Company, which also has a significant operation in glass production, as well as air conditioners and transmission towers.

At the end of June the company demonstrated its new steel plates rolling machine by performing a cold rolled bending of steel plates of 180mm thickness.
