Masdar Institute provost John Perkins returns to UK for 'personal reasons'.

The Masdar Institute of Science and Technology Provost John Perkins has resigned, media relations officer Lesley Snyman confirmed in a press statement.

“Masdar Institute confirms the decision of Dr Perkins to return to the UK for personal reasons. The Institute will be announcing a replacement in due course,’’ Snyman said.

Perkins joined Masdar Institute from the University of Manchester, where he was Vice-President and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences.

This is the second senior departure from Abu Dhabi’s joint project with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Very close period, second departure! Sure there's something going on but no one knows what is happening exactly.

Perkins’s resignation follows the departure of head of research Tariq Ali, a former UK government energy adviser and director of the Energy and Environment Office at London’s Imperial College.

The two most senior employees at the Masdar Institute were appointed in 2009.

The government of Abu Dhabi has pledged an investment of US$22 billion to ensure Masdar’s status as an international hub for renewable energy. Masdar Institute, a graduate-level university for renewable energy research that opened last September, is envisioned as the venture’s centrepiece.

Masdar has just successfully hosted an international renewable energy conference as part of the 32nd Assilah International Cultural Festival in the Kingdom of Morocco. The conference, entitled “Renewable Energy - A Leap Towards Human Development", attracted speakers and delegations from around the world.

The success of the conference is being hailed as an important milestone for MENA as the region further strengthens its growing reputation as a leader in the promotion and implementation of renewable energy, said Masdar chief executive Dr Sultan Al Jaber.
