The construction industry has reacted to the news that UAE’s Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRA) is set to suspend services on the popular BlackBerry smartphone range.

From October 11, all Internet, messaging and email services will be halted on the devices. The TRA said, in a statement, that the ban would remain in place until "these BlackBerry applications are in full compliance with UAE regulations".

Saudi Arabia has acted even faster. On Sunday afternoon, Saudi Arabia's telecoms regulator, the Communications and Information Technology Commission, ordered local operators freeze the Messenger function for BlackBerry users this month, industry sources said.

Hundreds of firms across the region issue the devices to staff as the free instant messaging is a cost effective way of reaching them.

Sources from two operators in the kingdom said the CITC had sent a memo notifying them of the order without explaining the move.

Users of micro-blogging site Twitter immediately sent remarks about the issue. Within hours ‘UAE’ ‘suspend’ and ‘Etisalat’ were among the most searched for terms.

Analysts suggest that there are around half a million of the devices in the UAE, with the majority of them in the hands of business users.

The bar is due to ‘security concerns’ from the TRA as the maker of the phones base its servers in North America, so messages sent from the devices cannot be monitored in the UAE.
