Mott MacDonald has been appointed detailed civil and structural design engineer for ten elevated metro stations in Chennai in the state of Tamil Nadu by Consolidated Construction Company Limited.

India’s fastest-growing economic region, Chennai has the country’s highest reliance on public transport. The proposed high-capacity, high-frequency metro will not only be a cheaper mode of transport, but also provide for a safer, reliable and better customer service.

The $3.1 billion Chennai Metro Rail Project comprises two corridors. The 23km corridor (1 to 14.3km underground and 8.8km elevated) will run from Washermanpet to the Airport via Anna Salai. The second corridor, which is 22km long (9.7km underground and 12.3km elevated) will run from Chennai Central to St. Thomas Mount via Koyambedu.

The section from Washermanpet to Saidapet on Corridor 1 and from Periyar EVR Salai to Anna Nagar 2nd Avenue on Corridor 2 will be underground. The remainder of the system will be elevated.

Mott MacDonald’s team of metro professionals will provide all civil, mechanical, electrical and architectural services for the ten elevated metro stations.

“With close to a decade’s experience on metro projects in India and around the world, we are delighted to be able to play a key role in such a prestigious project, and continue our historical association with India’s metros,” said Mott MacDonald project director Mohan Gupta.

“It is a complex project that requires Mott MacDonald to combine its global and local leading edge skills in transportation engineering. We believe our expertise, knowledge, experience and enthusiasm will help facilitate quality and timely delivery of our services to our client,” said Gupta.

“Our metro team is also presently engaged in the tender design of Chennai underground metro and in checking viaducts within elevated stations. We have also been awarded the tender design work for Koyambedu depot.” Work on Phase 1 of the Chennai Metro is expected to be completed in 2015.
