This South Korean conglomerate (known as a chaebol) was founded in 1947 as a construction company. At its peak in the 1990s, it was the largest group of companies in the country. However, the 1997 financial crisis forced the group to spin off the heavy industries division which makes ships and construction equipment, as well as the automotive division, which also makes light commercial vehicles and heavy trucks. Being apart from the parent company hasn't done the firm any harm though. Following a merger with rival automaker Kia, it has become one of the largest car makers in the world, and the fifth largest commercial vehicle maker. Email to friend
