London Underground: When it comes to metros, the London Underground (affectionately known as 'the Tube') is the granddaddy of them all. Operating since 1863, it was the first underground railway system in the world. In 2009 it carries around 3.4 million people a day, across 270 stations laid out on 11 lines stretching a total of 400km. Its map is a design classic whose influence can be seen on almost every metro system in the world. Interestingly, despite being the 'Underground', around 55% of the track is above ground.
